Struan served respective terms in office as both President and Senior Vice President of the European Parliament’s Fisheries Committee. In those roles he presided over the reform of the CFP, the long-term cod and hake recovery plans and dealing with the on-going crisis in the whitefish sector, where he secured an emergency 150 million Euro socio-economic aid fund for devastated whitefish communities.

He also successfully fought off attempts to end the 12-mile limit around the UK’s coast and attempts to open up the Shetland Box.

Struan presided over new policies for aquaculture and for fishing in the Mediterranean. He also arranged visits of the Fisheries Committee to Scotland, Ireland, Italy, Spain, Canada, Chile, Mexico and Finland, where the EU has major trade interests.
